The actual zine

So the zine was originally going to look quite forensic and sterile, and it still does but now I have taken off the labels on the photos so it's not stating the obvious.

This also means some images are a little more ambiguous so your wondering what they are until you hear the commentary. I have kept the label maker idea and printed out the title and my name on the back so it still has that kind of police file look about it.

Its double sided photocopied black and white so it's easily reproducible.

zine Project

So I chose to read through the zine and just see what happened, (one take) I explained what the items were and maybe why they are there / important. It makes up a little story and I quite like it. I had to have some sort of video so I just added a few photos of my car played slowly so they weren't too distracting. The car comes up in the story so it's not completely random. I added the old film effect so it's like a kind of joke about how old the car is and a kind of documentary look too.

Holy HELL!!

the reason it doesnt look like I have been blogging for a while is because I have been having a nightmare with trying to get my audio on youtube....I have tried lots of tricks and programmes but in the end had to make a video and upload that using iband and imovie.....this is after doing quite a few voiceovers and trying to make them into mp3's, so basically I have ended up with this youtube video

Lenticular Printing

This is when you want two images on one card to imply movement/ animation when the image is tilted.....i have looked into making it myself and have just got a load of demo's of already made ones??

Turner prize 2010

This audio was played out in a white washed room.....it doesn't seem very moving but when your in there and maybe close your eyes its strange at how powerful it is! maybe its the contrast to running round london all day but its calming and disconserting at the same time. Maybe having some strange audio playing as you read the zine is the answer?

Visiting the Tate Britain this weekend

  • Unfortunately I didn't have my camera or a notepad so....

there was one picture that really interested me in particular. It was a kind of mind map analysing how old people deal with society changing and alienation. The artist had framed pictures and created links to objects such as a plant pot and written "to brighten up the hall" and a picture of youths in a playground and saying "I try and avoid the park at night" really showing the isolation and difficulties of living on state pension on your own! very moving and sad.

THE POINT OF MENTIONING IT!

I liked how he did the layout how he commented on images that are seemingly pointless and giving them a back story, even making them something to think twice about......I could do the same with my stuff! give the backstory to why I have a pair of huge headphones or why I love my car so much!

The Annoyed Objects

This is a funny video bout what objects would say if they could??

A couple of bits from my inventory

Here are a couple of my essentials / stuff I had on me....including my favourite shoes, my car and a stolen reserved sign woops!

It's kind of like a list of stuff the police forensics would look though and catalogue. I like how my life will be examined by what I own. They build up a profile of the type of person I am and what I like doing by looking at the stuff I have. Little clues like train tickets and that I have art books etc!

My stuff! a reflection of me....whats left when i am gone

I have run with the idea of documenting and therefore analysing my possessions, these are narrowed down to possessions I bring on campus with me every day (or one such day).......debris is usually thought of as rubbish but when I think of debris i think of a collection of things / objects.

I photographed all the objects I brought to uni that day including my pants and car so that I could tell the whole story.

“ Do You Own Your Possessions, or Do They Own You?” (Matthew 19:16-30)

An object in possession seldom retains the same charm that it had in pursuit” - anon

Michael Landy destroyed all his possesions HIS possesions. A person is affected and judged by others on what they own, wear and buy.

Judge has negative connotations and we are told not to judge, but its just a way to form an educated guess about the person in question!

Its an automatic response to assume that a really fat peson doesn't do sport?
or that a well dressed man in a suit has a good job?

I know that people will form an oppinion of me and my lifestyle on what I wear and own and thats fine, it actually gives me a platform to express myself!

SIR EDUARDO PAOLOZZI

Ever since doing history of art a few years ago Ive always loved Paolozzi and loved how (when I was working on tottenham court road) I could see his mosaics ever day on my way to work!

Paolozzi is less known as a prolific collector, of rubbish and paraphernalia! His collections were SO vast they are now in art collections and time capsules. He saw the value in objects and their meaning something that I want to research and understand.

I collect a few things, but am not a hoarder, I collect these firetrap gnomes and I always get the latest issue of a few magazines. I am a person who buys things of great value rather than lots of cheap things, because I believe in quality and respect for your possessions

Notes on layout / focus of project

FROM THE NOTES :

  • inventory of my stuff (debris as in objects things I carry around (motion) and reflect my type of personality)
  • analysis of an object like a chair, how different objects are damamged and drawn on and what those objects tell the user/viewer.

Infographics

I was thinking about images into language, so this is a good example of how by "reading" the images they make up a story!

iCandy Visual Search and Music

Idea bout using the barcode and the zine!!

So I am thinking about having the code printed on say the first or second page. I will record a little story or narration on my Dictaphone then the reader can be guided through the images in the zine. I can tell them my observations and point out things they might not have noticed themselves!

So I have found a site called iCandy where it writes song codes so hopefully I can figure out how to convert my voice recording into a similar format....

Authors@Google: Travis Millard

This video looks at how self promotion works with zines!

Augmented reality!!!

The coolest thing I have seen in a long time, there are websites where you can print off a code and by using flash and a webcam the camera reads the code and displays a character. The character can be programmed to do a number of animations and appears like a hologram on the paper! Here is a screen shot of me playing with one, but there are others.....

The only problem would be making this technology relevent to what I want to say? I dont really have the need at the moment to need to visualise 3D objects in this brief so I might shelve the idea till i can justify it!

Shooting from the hip!

This book is fantastic.......it observational and funny. I am trying to think of ways to visually express my ideas and think having small amounts of text is useful, he also uses black and white photography which has a classic feel, but also a kind of random and spontaneous feel. I will scan some of my favourite images in. The pictures aren't pretty or well composed - most of the time but they are interesting because your being let into the artists life!

Its frank and honest like when he says Debbie has a huge arse and is it bad to photograph a blind guy - well yeah probably!

Quilling

Thinking about all this art from rubbish stuff, I remember doing a bit of quilling and think I could combine type and debris with it? The top image is my own quilled skull and the two lower ones are Leona Wolff's

http://www.lenawolff.com/

I found this stuff
in my car, so that counts as debris i think! we went over to the park and started cutting up the bottles and cans to make floral type objects and place them in the area.....you can't really make madonna boobs natural so just threw together with the other random dress up stuff in there.
My parking ticket and scratch cards etc just make up the "found object" idea.

What am I trying to say??? - 2

I could look at my motion through the campus and the debris I leave behind. The traces of me in the college. Through what I say, where I go and what notes I take.......reflection on what I say in the form of type.

My Barcode

I generated this QR barcode on http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ later I will print it out and see if it works (I made it to link to a url - which is for this zine blog) I will have to find the barcode reading software and install that too!
http://qrcode.kaywa.com/img.php?s=8&d=http%3A%2F%2Fchessierosierzine.blogspot.com%2F

maybe for a reader i could try http://katanshi.com/Products.php

Boosting reflections

Here I had the colour image but in black and white I wouldn't be very distinct so here I added HDR toning and played round with it until it was more vivid. I like how I am not looking at the camera but out at the viewer. I also like how the paving slabs have too much detail and look like they are moving under my feet.

Wednesday 6 October 2010

I hyped up some of the images properties to boost the refections, I love the paint drips and splatters on the table and how the light changes because the light doesn't get through the window properly

NO REFLECTION!

One of my photos but I took myself out of the image...so it looks odd but you dont know why? I also put it in black and white because thats how it would be in the zine I then added another image on top so that it looked as if there were two of me....

The PEN Story

If I can manage something along the lines of this I would be very happy! I love how it interacts with all the different props like the fish tanks. I think my favourite part is how he is a constant and a calyst in the images.....He is the story! maybe I should take the story of going through the campus as my story, me as the main character? or someone else so I could direct them?

DEADLINE post-it stop motion

Again this stop motion is really appealing to me! I don't mind doing time consuming things as long as they look cool afterwards...The only thing is translating something like this into the zine if I can't manage doing the barcode - computer transfer?

No Debris

Talking about debris as litter.....I think that debris doesnt have to be small, just discarded! I will try find some discarded objects around campus.

Synchronized Swimming-Greece Team, 2007 Fina World Champions

Thinking about reflections that are of each other. Making a group act as a single organism like the body. The reflect and contrast each other but always in a methodical time and beat running through.

Phil's art!- reflections

Not the most inspiring but gets the message across about reflections would be nice to see multiples of four, for example....over did the idea a little!

What am I trying to say???

In the project we have to research the four themes reflection, debris, motion and type but what am I going to use the themes to express.

DEBRIS___Seen as its my first week I might have the idea of exploration and finding odd parts of the buildings and just photographing things that catch my eye.

TYPE ___I could try and show what my first week was like by recording conversations between myself and my course mates and use the type in an illustrative way

DEBRIS____I might illustrate how I got a parking ticket?
The parking ticket could be debris.

MOTION____This could link into motion and how I have to drive every day. The route to campus? Could have images of my car, mirrors, engine, whats in the car...

REFLECTION____I could try and see how many times I could find my reflection in the enviroment.

Reflection pics off web

These images are quite literal interpretations of the word reflection but show how the camera can capture the images even in monochomatic way and doesnt loose too much detail.....This workd with simple reflections but not as well with landscapes as the colours help define what is real and what is a refraction.

Definitions of the theme words

Webcam as Barcode Scanner

This simply shows how the webcam picks up paprallel lines and reads these as codes.

Barcoding the images

This is the website I found a barcode generator on...will have to test out how well it works later....then will have to figure out how to read the code effectivley

A collection of zine artists

http://www.elkzine.com/books.html

THIS!! is a collection of artists ZIne's This image from Vince Aletti really captures the cool swagger of the model and doesn't need text to describe the mood of the image. I personally think zine's should have limited text and be able to hold their own with the imagery! This means the reader makes up their own mind on what your trying to say

The themes quick ideas

Definitions of Zine - Derived from "fanzine" (a contraction of "fan magazine"), pronounced "zeen." The term came into use during the 1980s to refer to a small, low-circulation magazine or newspaper, self-published out of passion for the subject rather than for personal gain, usually produced with the aid of desktop ...

From doing these quick spider grams I realised what the things were I could document but didnt have a clear theme of what I was taking the images of??
